The Orange Years - The Nickelodeon Story (2020)
Part two of my retro doc review discusses The Orange Years - The Nickelodeon Story. This is the documentary I didn't know I needed. I was so excited to see this after hearing a podcast by my buddy, Oh I Had That, featuring the filmmaker Scott Barber. Listen here.
The Orange Years documents the rise of Nickelodeon, featuring the actors, writers, and creators from the very first Nickelodeon shows that aired on the network. Some of the original programing included Pinwheel, You Can't Do That On Television, Hey Dude, Double Dare and more. This fascinating film is essentially a look at television, its history and how Nickelodeon was an absolute innovator at its craft. You'll learn how they pushed creative boundaries and let the creator's imaginations run wild like never before on television. This freedom was the driving force that led to Nick's success and a massive 90's fanbase which is timeless, loyal and unique to Nickelodeon.
Did you know that Doug, Ren & Stimpy and The Rugrats were the very first Nicktoons?
Some faces featured in the film you may remember include Marc Summers, Melissa Joan Hart, Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Danny Tamberelli, Lori Beth Denberg and more. The only person missing I would have been thrilled to see is Summer Sanders. I always got the sense that Summer and Marc were like the cool, big sister and brother of the network.
This film is a complete nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up watching Nickelodeon. It sparked some hidden memories for me, and I know it will do the same for you.
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime
In case you missed it, the first movie on my list of Must-See Documentaries for Any 80's/90's Kid was The Last Blockbuster (<-click for the review).
